For 33 years, Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange has been a home for people who believe in bicycles as tools for mobility, equity, education, and sustainability. From refurbished bike donations to hands-on repair education, our workshop has been the place where volunteers, students, and neighbors come together to keep our region rolling.

We want to share important news about our future — and how you can help ensure SVBE continues to serve Silicon Valley for decades to come.

Our Current Situation

We may need to vacate our building by the end of the year, leaving us without a home.

Facility transitions are never simple for an organization like ours. We are not a traditional retail shop: we are a workshop, warehouse, event space and community hub all in one. The space we occupy directly determines how many bikes we can refurbish, how many people we can train and how many neighbors we can serve.

We are actively working with partners, municipalities and supporters to identify options, and we are approaching this moment with intention, creativity and optimism.

What We’re Looking For

We need a facility that allows us to continue operations in 2026 and beyond. This may take several forms:

  • A short-term or long-term lease
  • An underutilized municipal, private or public space
  • Or potentially a building for sale, with flexible financing or purchasing terms suitable for a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

Our basic needs include:

  • 9,000+ square feet
  • Ground-floor access with roll-up door(s)
  • Light industrial or workshop zoning
  • Space to safely refurbish, store and distribute bicycles
  • Accessibility via transit or bike routes for volunteers and program participants
  • Retail space for selling refurbished bikes and new accessories

We’re Asking You, Our Community, for Help

SVBE's many bikes in our shop

If you have:

  • Leads on available buildings or land
  • Connections to property owners, brokers or city staff
  • Ideas for grants, bridge funding or capital support
  • Or simply a suggestion or introduction

Please reach out to us. Even small leads can open big doors. You can email our Director of Programs, Kelly, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. directly.

It’s also possible that during this transition we may need to pause or reduce some normal operations temporarily. Your support (financial, logistical, and relational) will directly help us navigate this period with stability and care.

Support Our Transition

Relocating a nonprofit workshop comes with real costs: moving, storage, compliance, deposits and potential downtime. Donations made during this period will directly support:

  • Facility search and transition expenses
  • Protecting staff capacity during uncertainty
  • Ensuring we can resume bike donations and repair events as quickly as possible

Donate financially to support our upcoming transition and maintenance of current programs.

Why We’re Confident

While change can feel unsettling, SVBE is moving forward from a position of strength:

  • A Proven Track Record: In 2025 alone, we donated over 900 refurbished bicycles, mobilized 800+ volunteers and diverted tons of material from local landfills.
  • A Strong Reputation: Our 30+ years of community trust can open doors: to cities, partners and supporters who believe in our mission.
  • A Supportive Network: Volunteers, advocates and partners across Silicon Valley are already helping us explore possibilities.

We are more than a building. SVBE is a people-powered organization — and that has always been our greatest asset.

Moving Forward Together

SVBE has weathered many changes over the past three decades because we have never done this work alone. This moment is no different.

Thank you for believing in our mission, sharing our story and helping us find our next home. With your support, we will continue encouraging our communities to choose bicycles — for health, equity, and a sustainable future.

Thank you
