In January 2026, Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange was honored to receive grant support from both the Kiwanis Club of Mountain View and the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos.
We are deeply grateful for their continued investment in our work and in the well-being of our shared community.
Why This Support Matters
Transportation is often overlooked as a basic human need — yet it is the thread that connects people to employment, education, healthcare and stability.
In Los Altos and Mountain View alone, nearly 3,900 residents commute by bicycle. Beyond that, many more individuals struggle daily with transportation barriers. Across neighboring San Mateo County, approximately 8% of residents report difficulty accessing healthcare due to unreliable transportation. These challenges disproportionately impact low-income households, individuals without postsecondary education and Latinx community members.
These are not abstract numbers. They represent neighbors who risk losing access to opportunity simply because they lack reliable transportation.
How SVBE Responds
Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange exists to meet this need directly.
-
In 2025, we refurbished and donated 903 bicycles.
-
We distributed 1,147 helmets, locks and bike lights to ensure safe riding.
-
Approximately 360 bikes were donated specifically to residents or partner organizations serving Los Altos and Mountain View.
-
We hosted more than 150 free, public repair education events, empowering people with hands-on mechanical skills and confidence.
A bicycle can mean keeping a job. Getting to school. Making a medical appointment. Showing up reliably for life.
Through our longstanding partnership with the Mountain View Community Services Agency and many more local nonprofits, we coordinate distribution so that individuals can receive safe, ready-to-ride bicycles without navigating complicated systems. Most of our donations remain within 10 miles of our shop.
With Gratitude
Grants from the Kiwanis Clubs of Mountain View and Los Altos help us continue refurbishing bikes, distributing safety equipment, hosting free educational programs and improving how we measure and strengthen our impact.
We are thankful not only for their financial support, but for their decades-long commitment to service in our community. It is an honor to work alongside organizations that believe — as we do — that small, practical interventions can create lasting change.
Together, we are helping our neighbors move forward.
