As we approach the year-end, we at Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange (SVBE) are reflecting on the remarkable impact we've had in 2023 and setting our sights on even greater achievements in 2024.

In the first 11 months of 2023, with the support of generous donors like you, we were able to donate 846 bikes, distribute 322 locks, 139 helmets, and 90 lights to individuals in our community who rely on these essential tools for work and daily life in the Bay Area.

The tireless efforts of our dedicated volunteers extended beyond our workshop, with over 300 bikes repaired at events across the peninsula. We reached schools, downtown city centers, and collaborated with partner organizations to make a lasting impact on our community's mobility.

However, our journey is not just about the present; it is built upon a legacy dating back to SVBE's founding in 1993. To date, we have donated over 11,000 bikes to various organizations and individuals, both locally and globally. From supporting organizations throughout the peninsula to fostering partnerships with local schools in Silicon Valley, SVBE has been a beacon of positive change.

In 2023, we initiated a transformative project with Woodside High School to revitalize their bike barn into an instructional facility for students. We continue to work with various schools in San Mateo and Santa Clara County to provide bikes and repairs for students. These projects and partnerships exemplify our commitment to not only providing transportation solutions but also fostering education and community engagement.

Our dedicated volunteer mechanics, with tens of thousands of hours of service, have not only meticulously repaired over 11,000 bicycles but have also mentored individuals of all ages. The impact of SVBE extends beyond the immediate community, with former volunteers pursuing careers in bike fleet management, college students gaining valuable skills, and high schoolers finding inspiration for their future endeavors.

All of the 11,000+ bikes that have moved through SVBE were generously donated by the community. Rather than going directly to landfill these bikes were refurbished and made a substantial impact on sustainable transportation throughout the peninsula.

As SVBE enters its fourth decade, our vision remains unwavering: to create an enriching experience for our volunteers and provide ever greater service to our community. To achieve this, we are reaching out to our valued supporters and community leaders to help us continue providing meaningful transportation, bicycle repair instruction and mentorship, and a pathway to reducing the community’s waste stream.

  • Empower the Community: Your support will empower us to reach more schools, collaborate with additional organizations, and extend our educational initiatives. Together, we can make a substantial difference in the lives of individuals across Silicon Valley.
  • Spread the Word: Share our story with your network and encourage others to join our cause.
