Bicycle Exchange Growth Narrative

A Narrative for Sustainable Growth at Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange (SVBE)

For over 30 years, SVBE has been a cornerstone of our community, providing valuable services through our dedicated volunteers. While our current rented space has served us well, we recognize the need to plan for the future and ensure the long-term sustainability of our mission.

Our Vision: To be a powerful force in increasing access to bicycles and promoting a culture of cycling in our community.

Our Guiding Principle: To empower volunteers and support them in their efforts to serve the community.

Growth with a Focus on People and Programs:

At SVBE, we're excited to enhance the volunteer experience as we grow, creating an environment where volunteers can dive into projects they love and work at their own pace. We aim to do this by:

  • Enhancing the Volunteer Experience: We value the critical role volunteers play in our success. We will create a more welcoming and supportive environment by providing dedicated training spaces, clear communication, and opportunities for volunteers to choose their preferred roles (fixing bikes, participating in outreach programs, or supporting operations).
  • Expanding Programs: We will explore new program ideas that align with our mission and address community needs. We will gather feedback from volunteers and the community to refine these offerings.
  • Building a Strong Foundation: We will solidify our current operations, and develop and implement a comprehensive growth plan. This will ensure that our growth is sustainable and maximizes our impact.
  • Building Strategic Partnerships: We aim to collaborate with even more community organizations to leverage shared resources and expand our reach.
  • Long-Term Facility Goals: While a permanent home would bring us stability and room for growth, we're excited to embrace and expand the use of our current space for now. Securing a second, permanent, location remains a long-term goal, potentially within the next 4-8 years"

Implementation Strategy:

To achieve these goals, we will follow a phased approach, focusing on:

  • Foundation Building: Solidify current operations, and develop a comprehensive growth plan.
  • Program Development: Develop new programs, conduct pilot programs, and gather feedback.
  • Volunteer Empowerment: Provide resources, training, and recognition opportunities to enhance the volunteer experience.
  • Partnership Development: Cultivate and strengthen relationships with community organizations.
  • Financial Sustainability: Explore additional revenue streams, optimize operations, and develop a robust fundraising strategy.
  • Strategic Staff Growth: Carefully expand our team to enhance volunteer experiences and mission fulfillment.

Moving Forward:

By investing in our people, programs, and infrastructure, SVBE can significantly increase its impact on the community while preserving our core values of volunteerism and accessibility. We invite everyone to participate in shaping this future – we are stronger together!
